BT2K works quite reliably with properly installed, unaltered and fully-functioning versions of IE4 and 5.

But if you're having trouble, you're not alone: IE browser problems are not uncommon and can be caused by a variety of factors, including leftover pieces of early beta versions (if you ran any IE betas) or misinstalled or faulty ActiveX/OCX components that you may have picked up during normal browsing, and add-ons or alterations  to the browsers installed by third parties (AOL,
Go!Zilla, etc.).

Also, Windows Update and  "Service Pack" Patches sometimes fail, and end up giving you older components on top of newer ones..

Common symptoms include scripting errors,  the loss of "target" window functions, the inability to follow links, the inability to save Cookies,  and---this is a very weird one---a situation where every link keeps bringing you to the same page!

[ Note: The AOL and CompuServe versions of IE and versions of IE installed over AOL and CompuServe versions seem unusually prone to trouble: These versions of IE have been altered by AOL. The AOL setup also installs a custom and private set of networking protocols on your PC, and uses them to connect to the Internet via AOL's own private network. There's so much proprietary stuff going on here it's hard to say exactly where trouble can arise, but the fact is the AOL and CompuServe versions of IE have more trouble with these tests than any other version. Alas, AOL now owns Netscape, so chances aren't good that AOL will devote lots of energy into making their version of IE work better! ]

FIRST STEP: Try closing all browser windows (this helps ensure a clean start and prevents interference from other web sites or pages) and rerunning BrowserTune from the start.

BE SURE TO FOLLOW ALL THE DIRECTIONS, including flushing the cache.

THEN: If you still have trouble, the simplest remedy for almost all ongoing browser problems is to uninstall and then reinstall a fresh, full copy of IE, preferably one supplied directly by Microsoft rather than by AOL or another ISP. That's the safest, best, and surest fix--- although it's a pain.

If that doesn't work, or if you're more daring, you can try this fix suggested in the Microsoft KnowledgeBase:

1.Click Start, and then click Run.

2.In the Open box, type the following line:
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll

3.Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:
DllRegisterServer in actxprxy.dll succeeded.

4.Click Start, and then click Run.

5.In the Open box, type the following line:
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll

6.Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:
DllRegisterServer in shdocvw.dll succeeded.

If the above doesn't work, it's possible your scripting engine has become corrupted. This is especially common with modified versions of the browser, such as the AOL version of IE. See this page for possible fixes.

If these fixes still don't work, please try the other suggestions in the "browser failure" page here.

Or, you wish to investigate the trouble more fully before proceeding with any fixes, the full shipping version of BrowserTune---BT98---is available right now to help you evaluate any browser!
