Netscape's JavaScript and Microsoft's clone version, called JScript, are both on the way out: They will be replaced with a standards-based scripting language that combines elements of both. The new language is called ECMAscript, after the standards body that controls it: the European Computing Machinery Association. Both Netscape and Microsoft have pledged ECMA support; the defining document is called "ECMA-262." Most other browsers support earlier versions of JavaScript or JScript. JavaScript version 1.2 is by far the most common, with some of the newest browsers supporting JS 1.3 or higher. If your browser doesn't support JavaScript at all (or if you've turned off support), or if it supports an older version such as JS 1.0 or 1.1, you're missing out on a lot of functionality.
